Dealing with mental health issues can be challenging but with an optimistic and supportive approach…we can help open the door to possibilities.

How Mental Health Support works at Maltby

We are invested in supporting children and youth and believe that through a collaborative approach we can offer each child, youth and family the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

STEP 1 – YOUR CONCERNS

Our first conversation with you is a chance to begin to understand your mental health concerns and work together to find some next steps. Many families experience improvements after this one session!

STEP 2 – YOUR PLAN

The next step is to build a plan that will work for you. Together, we identify the issues that you are hoping to resolve, what works best for you, what methods will be used, and the outcome that you can expect. The treatment plan can range from a single session to many sessions and may include intensive home services.

STEP 3 – YOUR JOURNEY

Once treatment begins, together you and your Psychotherapist will regularly review if the services put in place are helping to resolve the issues. We will continue to work with you to make adjustments to your plan to best meet your needs.

STEP 4 – YOU’RE ON TRACK

Once you feel better able to manage the mental health issues that brought you to Maltby, your services will wrap up. If at anytime you need us again, we are here for you.

Image description Education Community Partnership Programs

Maltby works in collaboration with our partnering school boards to provide programming and support to students at a variety of sites/classrooms across KFL&A.

Program Details

Nexus
The Nexus Program, offered in partnership with Limestone District School Board, provides classroom-based structured learning environments that combine mental health intervention with individualized education. This program is for students (Grade 1-12) whose social, emotional and behavioural needs require more support than the regular classroom setting can provide. Nexus works in collaboration with caregivers to develop the skills of children and youth to manage their mental health challenges. Families of students referred to Nexus need to be actively involved with Maltby Centre in addressing these needs. Referrals to the program are made jointly by the in-school team and the Maltby Centre therapist.

Lakers/Explore – these two programs, located at Granite Ridge Education Centre (GREC) and Sydenham High School, respectively, are available for students at each of these schools who are struggling with behavioural and emotional concerns. Each program has a teacher and an EA provided by the Limestone District School Board, and is supported by a consultant (who is a Mental Health Therapist) from Maltby Centre. The Lakers program accepts students in grades 9-12, while Explore focuses on grades 9-10.

BELONG – Trauma Informed Classroom is an Education and Community Partnership Program between the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, Limestone District School Board, and Maltby Centre. The classroom provides students in grades 2-6 with an intensive and effective placement where their emotional well-being is the primary focus. Relationship is the main vehicle of instruction, as staff through PACE (playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy) help students to integrate their trauma, shift their world view, and understand their stories.

SEP – SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM – This program is intended to help families that have children struggling with attending school on a consistent basis. The collaborative mental health team consists of one mental health therapist and two intensive services counsellors. The Mental Health Therapist will provide mental health support/therapy to the individual child, parent and/or guardians, as well as provide case management. The intensive services counsellor will provide in-home support to children and their guardians transitioning back into an elementary school environment in collaboration with the individuals home school. This work can encompass supporting the family with sleep hygiene, morning routine, predictable structure, managing anxiety, applying rewards/consequences, and other identified mental health barriers to school attendance.
