Getting an Autism Assessment
What is a Developmental Assessment?
A developmental assessment will look at your child’s social, cognitive, communication, and motor skills. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not diagnosed based on only one factor or symptom, but when a combination of specific behaviours, communication delays, and/or developmental disabilities is confirmed (Autism Ontario, 2026). A developmental assessment may result in a diagnosis of ASD for your child.
Start by making an appointment with your family doctor or pediatrician. Talk to them about your concerns.
Some doctors may have limited experience with autism. If that is the case, they may refer your child to a specialist (such as a developmental pediatrician) or a team of professionals for a developmental assessment.
KidsInclusive – Centre for Child & Youth Development provides publicly funded developmental assessment services for children and youth who are experiencing challenges with their development. A developmental assessment is a specialized process where the goal is to learn more about a child’s developmental profile. Through this process you will learn more about your child’s developmental strengths and needs in areas such as speech and language, motor skills, play, social skills, behaviour, and early learning. A referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is required for developmental assessment services at KidsInclusive.
You can also connect with a private psychologist (fee-based) who can complete an assessment.
