Mental Health Services

The Infant and Early Years Mental Health Program is a specialized service whose primary goal is the supporting of parents/caregivers with their infant/young children who present with social, emotional, and/or behavioural concerns.

Our Psychotherapy and Intensive Family Services aim to provide parents/caregivers with the support, guidance, information, and resources they need to strengthen effective parenting approaches, promote parent-child connection and attachment, and bolster parent confidence in their ability to support their child’s healthy development.

Presenting issues can include:

Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ)

  • 🌱 What Is the ASQ?

The ASQ (Ages & Stages Questionnaire) is a short checklist that helps us understand how your child is growing and developing.

    It looks at things like:
    • How your child moves
    • How they communicate
    • How they play
    • How they solve problems
    • How they act with others
    ________________________________________

    💙 Why We Use It
    • It helps us celebrate what your child is doing well
    • It helps us notice if your child might need a little extra support
    • It helps you learn what to expect at your child’s age
    • It gives us a shared starting point for talking about development
    • It helps track progress over time
    ________________________________________

✍️ What You Need to Do
    • You answer a short set of questions about what your child can do
    • You can do it on your own, or we can do it together
    • It only takes about 10–15 minutes
There are no right or wrong answers — every child grows at their own pace.
    ________________________________________

🧩 How We Use the Results
    • We review the answers with you
    • We talk about your child’s strengths
    • If we notice any areas where your child might benefit from support, we discuss gentle next steps
    • We can share activities to help your child learn new skills
    ________________________________________

🔬 ASQ and Research Participation (Optional)
    • The ASQ is also part of a research project that helps us better understand child development in our community.
    • You can choose whether or not you want to be included.
    • Your therapist will tell you more and answer any questions you may have.
    ________________________________________

    🤝 Our Goal
We use the ASQ to make sure you feel supported and your child gets what they need.
It’s simply a tool to help guide conversations and help your child thrive.

  • What is the Infant and Early Mental Health Care Pathway?

The IEMH Care Pathways were developed in collaboration with community agency partners who support children birth to six in your community.

As part of the IEMH Care Pathways initiative, agencies have committed to:

    • Following the IEMH Care Pathways maps
    • Utilizing the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQs) in their practice to screen children
    • Contributing anonymized ASQ data to the Canadian Database of Development, Infancy to Six (CanDDIS), the first Canadian database of child development for children from birth to six
