Maltby Centre is proud to offer a variety of pre-recorded workshops focused on Autism and Mental Health, available for families and caregivers to access on demand.

You may request up to 2 videos at a time by filling out our request form. Links to the videos will be sent to you via email during business hours (8:30am – 4:30pm).

Once you have viewed the video, a quick follow up survey will be sent to you including an invitation to book a follow up consultation.

General Topics for All Ages

  • Autism Services at Maltby Centre (15 minutes)

    For the past 30+ years Maltby Centre has been the leading provider of evidence-based Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) in the KFLA area. We offer a variety of services for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our services are individualized for family, youth, and child’s needs. Under the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) we offer Foundational Family Services which are publicly funded to help support building family capacity.

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will:
    • Review Foundational Services and how you can get started.
    • Understand how to connect with Maltby Centre for Autism Services.
    • Discover the breadth of Autism Services offered at Maltby Centre.

  • How to Shape a Behaviour (8 minutes)

    For the past 30+ years Maltby Centre has been the leading provider of evidence-based Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) in the KFLA area. We offer a variety of services for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our services are individualized for family, youth, and child’s needs. Under the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) we offer Foundational Family Services which are publicly funded to help support building family capacity.

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will:
    • Understand how new behaviours develop
    • Learn how to define a target behaviour
    • Learn how to break down a behaviour into smaller steps
    • Learn how to shift reinforcement from one step to another

  • Preventing Crisis and Supporting Big Emotions (22 minutes)

    It can be hard when big emotions happen. This workshop is designed to help caregivers support their children in ways that encourage regulation and make behavioural escalation less likely to occur. Through examples of common scenarios, we will discuss practical and helpful ways to use these strategies in real life.

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
    • Identify strategies to prevent behavioural escalation and encourage regulation
    • Identify strategies to de-escalate big emotions safely in the moment

  • Why Use Visual Supports (14 minutes)

    In this workshop, participants will receive a short presentation on the use of visual support to help teach children/youth with ASD, skills and independence. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and participate in group discussions.

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
    • Describe what visual supports are.
    • Explain why visual supports can help your child/youth learn new skills or develop independence.
    • Identify how to use visual supports to aid in your child/youth’s development.

  • Functions of Behaviour (39 minutes)

    For the past 20+ years Maltby Centre has been the leading provider of evidence-based Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) in the KFLA area. We offer a variety of services for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our services are individualized for family, youth, and child’s needs. Under the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) we offer Foundational Family Services which are publicly funded to help support building family capacity.

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will:
    • Understand the ABCs of your learner’s behaviour
    • Understand positive and negative reinforcement
    • Understand and be able to label the 4 functions of behaviour
    • Understand what antecedent and consequence strategies are
    • Understand your role in your learner’s behaviour

  • Reinforcement: The Why, What and How’s of Reinforcing Behaviour (23 minutes)

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will:
    • Understand how behaviour is learned
    • Understand what reinforcement is and how it can affect behaviour
    • Be able to label the ABCs of a behaviour
    • Learn what positive and negative reinforcement are.
    • Know how to pick a motivating reinforcer.

Workshops for Families of Young Children

  • Emotional Regulation Support for Parenting Children 0 – 6 (80 minutes)

    This workshop if for caregivers of children 0 – 6. As a result of participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
    • Learn relationship-based approaches and strategies to manage intense emotions
    • Understand the connection between development and emotional regulation
    • Describe ways you can support your young children with emotional regulation

  • How to Improve My Child’s Social Skills (24 minutes)

    This workshop has been developed to help parents and caregivers create opportunities for social skills development using general Applied Behaviour Analysis strategies.

    As a result of participating in the workshop, you will be able to:
    • Describe the social styles and explain how social skills may be different for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder.
    • Describe ways to enhance children and youth’s environment to encourage social opportunities and development.
    • Describe how to plan a play date or social “hang out” time.

  • Introduction to Neurodiversity (45 minutes)

    This workshop is facilitated by a Psychologist from Kids Inclusive and a Family Support Coordinator from Maltby Centre. It is designed for caregivers interested in learning about a new diagnosis, or a refresher on how autism presents day-to-day.

    This is an opportunity to learn about:
    • The basics of neurodiversity, specifically autism; and
    • Taking a neurodiversity affirming approach to parenting and supporting your child

  • Play to Grow (23 minutes)

    This workshop is designed for parents and caregivers who would like to learn more ways to use play with their child to facilitate learning. Parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to discover fun and creative ways to be engaged with their child during play while focusing on specific learning goals.

    As a result of participating in this workshop parents and caregivers will be able to:
    • Describe the stages of play throughout child development.
    • Explain how play may be different for children with ASD and specifically for their child.
    • Describe ways to enhance a child’s environment for each stage of play.

  • Teaching Your Child Toileting Skills (21 minutes)

    In this workshop participants will receive a short presentation on some general ABA strategies to begin teaching their child toileting skills.

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
    • Learn how to identify when your child is ready for toileting
    • Use general ABA strategies to help teach your child toileting skills.

  • Making Connections (66 minutes)

    This workshop is in collaboration with Early Expressions and Kids Inclusive designed for parents who are seeking strategies to help improve their child’s social communication.

    As a result of participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
    • Observe your child’s behaviour.
    • Better Understand your child’s sensory and self-regulation needs.
    • Encourage your child’s participation in social interactions.
    • Improve your child’s ability to communicate.

  • Teach and Talk with Pictures (59 minutes)

    This is a collaborative workshop through KidsInclusive and Maltby Centre Autism Services for parents/caregivers who have a child between the ages of 0 and 6 years old.

    As a result of participating in this workshop you will:
    • Learn how to stop reinforcing your child’s challenging behaviour.
    • Gain an increased understanding of communication and how to encourage it.
    • Understand how behaviour and communication are connected.

Workshops for Families of Children & Youth 7 – 18

  • What’s Important to Know About ADHD (25 minutes)

    This workshop is for parents of children/youth 7 – 18. As a result of participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
    • Understand what ADHD is
    • Dispel myths about ADHD
    • Discuss strategies that can assist children diagnosed with ADHD

  • Siblings and Autism (20 minutes)

    The Siblings & Autism workshop is designed to support youth who have a sibling with an autism diagnosis. This workshop provides information for siblings to learn about autism, understand its impact, and develop coping strategies. The workshop is aimed at youth aged 11-18.
